LEWISTON FFA HOSTS PAWNEE COUNTY SAFETY DAY
The hallways of Lewiston Schools were full of students attending the first Pawnee Countywide Progressive Safety Day on Wednesday. One hundred fifty-six second, third, and fourth graders from Pawnee City, HTRS and Lewiston attended along with their teachers. Major local supporters were Farmers Cooperative, Farm Credit Services and Agrium.
The activity began with guest safety speaker Mr. Greg Sanders addressing the group. Mr. Sanders relived a personal childhood tractor accident with the students where he lost fingers on his right hand.
The Lewiston FFA Chapter sponsored and organized the event. Chapter Advisor Dave Barnard was the coordinator. Students rotated through five morning sessions and five afternoon sessions. Each session was 23 minutes in length. At noon the entire group enjoyed the presentation on electrical safety by the Nebraska Public Power District on the football field. Each student received a safety “Goodie Bag” sponsored by the Bunge Corporation.
The FFA members served as group leaders and assistant presenters. Sessions that were presented were Animal Safety- Pawnee City FFA, Wildlife and Firearm Awareness- William Krause of the NE Game & Parks, Machinery Safety- Dennis Kenning of Farmers Cooperative, Computer Safety Awareness- Danni Stark of Diode Communications, Food Safety- Nancy Barr of Lewiston Schools and the Leadership, Character & Service Club, First Aid- Pawnee County Hospital, Fire Safety- Brandon Willey of Pawnee County Rescue, Train Safety Awareness- Aaron Hasselbring of Burlington Northern, Grain Handling Safety- Farmers Cooperative, and Weather Awareness- Karly Black of the Pawnee Co. Extension Service.
Agriculture education students assisting with the event were Dalton Anderson, Cari Howell, Megan Wehrbein, Karen Keyes, Miah Fulton, Colten Baker, Ryan Husa, Ryan Hunt, Richard Keyes, Skyler Salts, Jacob Meybrunn, Kristin Meybrunn, and Logan Anderson.
