The Lewiston Consolidated Board of Education, staff, and administration were extremely excited
to learn that a graduation ceremony to recognize the accomplishments of this year’s senior class
was going to become a reality. The current and statewide Directed Health Measure (DHM)
Order 2020-011 addresses both “gatherings” and “school activities”. However, the Governor has
issued changes that update the Directed Health Measure allowing graduations to happen under
the “Gatherings” portion of the DHM which changed on June 1, 2020.
Per requirement, Lewiston Consolidated Schools submitted a “graduation plan” that was
approved by Grant Brueggemann, Executive Director of the Southeast District Health Dept.
That plan took into account all of the safety measures required by the Nebraska Department of
Education and the DHM Order 2020-011 which is currently in effect. It is very important that
everyone attending the graduation ceremony follow the procedures that were submitted in that
plan. Those procedures are listed below. Failure to adhere to appropriate safeguards during the
conducting of the graduation ceremony could result in the continued spread of the COVID-19
virus.
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
Graduation Guidance for Parents and Immediate Family Members:
• We highly encourage those who are sick or at risk to please stay home.
• Fellowship, social gatherings, or other functions before or after the ceremony on the
school premises are NOT permitted as such gatherings could expose those present to the virus.
• Seniors will prepare for the graduation ceremony in the school lunchroom.
• Parents are being asked to stay out of the school.
• Parents and designated immediate family members will be provided seating in chairs on
the football field.
• Parents are being asked to report directly to the football field to be seated. (an usher will
show you to your assigned seating)
• Graduate families will be seated per social distanced measures.
• If you have assigned seating, please park south of the school or in the east parking lot.
• Parking south of the football field is for visitors that will be staying in or around their vehicle.
• The ceremony will take place in front of the football field grandstand.
• The football field public announcement system will be used.
• There will be NO reception line after the graduation ceremony ends.
• All parents and immediate family members are being asked to disperse when the
ceremony ends.
Graduation Guidance for Visitors:
• We highly encourage those who are sick or at risk to please stay home.
• Fellowship, social gatherings, or other functions before or after the ceremony on the
school premises are NOT permitted as such gatherings could expose those present to the virus.
• You are encouraged to stay in or beside your automobile at all times.
• The football field public announcement system will be used.
• Social distancing is required at all times.
• There will be NO public restrooms available.
• All visitors are being asked to disperse when the ceremony ends.
Further Considerations:
School leaders, parents, and visitors are all responsible for the social distancing and safety of
those attending school-sponsored graduation ceremonies and must limit physical participation on
the premises to adhere to the Governor’s Direct Health Measure (DHM).
Inclement Weather Plan:
Beings the event is scheduled outdoors - should weather cause the 10:00 am ceremony to be
postponed, we will first look at moving the starting time 4:00 pm the same day.
If weather causes the ceremony to be canceled, the ceremony will be moved to Saturday, June
27th at 10:00 am., with a 4:00 pm backup that same day.
